Since coming to Pittsburgh in 2008, Dr Sam Akhavan has been intimately involved with two sports communities: Rugby and Soccer. He started with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in 2008 and has served as their head orthopaedic physician ever since. He quickly also became involved with the two premier rugby teams in Pittsburgh - The Pittsburgh Harlequins and The Pittsburgh Forge, and currently serves a head physicians for both.
Through his local involvement with rugby, Dr Akhavan also became a team physician for the USA rugby Eagles National Team and has served as the Match Doctor for the USA sevens events in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, as well as the Head Match Doctor for SEVENS World Cup when it was hosted for the first time on US soil in San Francisco in 2018. Through his involvement, Allegheny Health Network has now become an Official Medical Provider for USA rugby
In addition, Dr Akhavan also serves as team physician for North Hills High School and North Gate High School and is the Orthopaedic consultant for Avonworth, Montour and Moon High School.
Dr. Akhavan had the honor of being involved in USA rugby in 2012, where he served as the physician for the USA Rugby under-20 team during the Junior World Championship Trophy in 2012
Since then, he became the physician for the Men's Eagles Senior team and accompanied them in BACK to BACK world cup in 2015 and 2019.
